Environmental monitoring fails in boring ways: dead batteries, flaky SIMs, sensors without excitation, clocks that drift, enclosures that aren’t actually weatherproof.
A serious SDI-12 telemeter design treats those as first-class:
- Sample cadence you can defend
- Hourly (or better) uplink over global cellular
- Multi-day autonomy with no sun
- GPS + solid timekeeping
- Switched power so probes aren’t siphoning the pack 24/7
Pretty dashboards are optional. Uptime in the river is not.
